Ice Hockey Rules & Regulations

1.    All players are required to be registered for the River Hawk Adult Hockey League for the league they would like to participate in. 

2.    All teams are required to have matching jerseys with permanent numbers. This also applies to the goaltender. Players without matching team jerseys will not be allowed to participate in any games until they have complied with this rule. Hockey Director’s digression will impact if this rule. 

3.    Players are allowed to register in more than one league with Hockey Director approval.

4.    All players are required to wear helmets, half-shields or full-face masks are optional.

5.    During the regular season, if a game ends in a tie, a run time 5 minute three on three overtime will be used at the end of regulation. The last minute of overtime will be stop time. Two points will be awarded in the standings to the winning team. Zero points will be awarded to a team who loses in regulation. One point will be awarded to a team that loses in overtime. If Overtime ends in a tie, there will be a sudden death shootout with the home team having the option of shooting first or second. Each team will have equal opportunity to score.

    1. A team cannot have a player shoot twice until at least one team has had all players shoot.
    2. Once the full roster of players has shot, players are eligible to shoot again. 
    3. If one team has less players than the other, both teams can have players shoot twice once the team with the smaller roster has had every player shoot. All in respect to Rule 5 Section I and Rule 5 Section II. 

 

6.    Playoff ties – 5-minute Stop Time; 5v5 Sudden Death. If the game is still tied, the game will go to a 5-player shootout with the home team having the option of shooting first or second.

    1. If the shootout is tied after 5 players, teams must use players who have not participated in the shootout up to that point. 
    2. Once the full roster of players has shot, players are eligible to shoot again with a repeat ruling of Rule 6 Section I. 
    3. If one team has less players than the other, both teams can have players shoot twice once the team with the smaller roster has had every player shoot. All in respect to both rule 6 Section I and Rule 6 Section II. 

7.    Any penalized player whose penalty had not been completed when the overtime period ends or who receives a penalty during a shootout procedure is not eligible to participate in any portion of the shootout.

8.    All penalties will be stop time. 

9.    If a team questions the eligibility of a player, they must ask the Scorekeeper to ask the captain of the team on which the player in question is playing for a picture ID. The picture ID must match the player in question and a name on the official roster (copies are also acceptable). If a player is not on the roster and not registered, they are not allowed to participate. If they do continue to participate, the team in which they play for must forfeit the game. 

10. Players are not allowed to play in a league if not registered, unless approved by the Hockey Director.

11. To be eligible for RHAHL playoffs, a player must be registered, rostered, and dressed for the entirety of 5 out of 9 regular season games. A player must be participating within the playing area to constitute these requirements. If a player registers with the RHAHL past the date in which they can participate in at least 5 games, it is the Hockey Director’s discretion if they can participate in playoffs or not. 

12. Goalie substitutions may only consist of a registered goalie from the same or lower-level league. If a non-registered goalie or goalie from a higher league would like to sub, you must gain approval from the Hockey Director.

13.  The violation of any/all substitution rules will result in a team’s forfeiting for that game, regardless of regular season or playoffs.

14. LEAGUE POLICY ON HARASSMENT - It is the policy of the league that no participant in any league event or activity shall harass, discriminate, or otherwise abuse any other participant or non-participant based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Furthermore, no participant shall make unwelcome sexual advances or comments to any participant or non-participant. This policy prohibits not only actions that are severe enough to be potentially unlawful, but also conduct or comments that are deemed inappropriate for a league activity. Such conduct is strictly prohibited and, if experienced or witnessed, should be brought to the attention of the league immediately, without fear of reprisal. The league will diligently respond to all such complaints, and reserves the right to issue disciplinary action, including suspension or removal from the League.

15. River Hawk Adult Hockey League uses on-ice officials from the Colorado Amateur Hockey Officiating Association. It is their job to assess minor, major and misconduct penalties as well as game misconduct, gross misconduct, and match penalties. Their decisions on these matters are final and not open to debate.

16. Any player who receives a game misconduct will be assessed an automatic two (2) game suspension. A second game misconduct during the current season will result in a four (4) game suspension. Any player who receives three (3) game misconducts during the season will be suspended for the balance of the season, including playoffs. The length of suspension for any player receiving a gross misconduct or match penalty will be determined by a League Disciplinary Board based on the severity of the infraction. 

17. If a player is suspended 3 times within a calendar year, the player will be suspended from the RHAHL for 365 days starting the day of third suspension.

18. Any player receiving a match penalty for fighting will receive a two (2) game suspension. For two (2) fighting penalties in a season player will receive a 4-game suspension. Three (3) fighting penalties in a season that player will be removed from the league permanently. 

19. Any Player who receives 4 minor penalties in a game will be suspended for the remainder of that game and one game after. Any player who receives 2 major penalties in a game will be suspended for the reminder of that game and one game after. 

20. Regular Season Standings will have tiebreakers. If teams are tied in points at the end of the season. The 1sttiebreaker is less Goals Against. The 2nd tiebreaker is Goal Differential. The 3rd tiebreaker is most Goals For. 

21. If a player seems or is inebriated, the hockey director, an on-ice official, or off-ice official may ask the player to leave the ice surface and ice arena for the remainder of the game. The player may return the following game to participate if deemed fit to play. If the player refuses to leave, further disciplinary actions will be taken to the point of permanently removing the player from all current and future RHAHL play without a refund.
